Dr. James Buck Dies in Chicago
January 20, 1914 -- Mountain Herald
Brother of A. W. Buck and Mrs. J. V. Scanlan of this Place.
Dr. James Buck, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Buck of Carrolltown, died at his home in Chicago last Friday morning, aged 57 years. The deceased had been in good health until a few weeks ago when he suffered an attack from gall stones. It refused to yield to treatment and made an operation necessary. His condition was such that the shock was too great and he died soon after.
James Buck was born and raised in Carrolltown. He took up the study of medicine at an early age and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphi. He spent some time abroad and completed his education in Vienna. He was apt in his studies and attracted attention. As a result he was made a surgeon in the Bavarian army. After returning to his native country, he again took up his profession and for the last eighteen years lived in Chicago, where he had a large practice. About 18 years ago he married Miss Catherine Grass of that city who still survives him. He is also survived by these children: Marie, age 16; Raymond, 14; and Cecil, 12. Dr. Buck came from one of the prominent families in Northern Cambria County. The parents were sterling, energetic characters and the children inherited splendid traits of character from them.
He will be mourned by these brothers and sisters: Dr. M. J. of Pittsburgh; Sylvester H. contractor of Elyria, O; A. W. Buck cashier of of the First National Bank in this place and President of the First National Bank of Carrolltown; Mary, wife of James V. Scanlan, of this place. Ambrose C. a hardware merchant of Braddock; E. J. mine inspector at Tonopah, Nev.; Anna, wife of James Eck of Carrolltown; Vincent J. a hardware merchant of Pittsburgh; and M. L. cashier of the Hastings Bank at Hastings.
The funeral was held in Chicago on Monday morning and the remains were interred in that city.
A. W. Buck and Mrs. James Scanlan of this place and Mrs. James Eck of Carrolltown left for Chicago Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral. They were joined at Pittsburg by Dr. M. J., (indecipherable name) and Sylvester, brothers of the deceased.
