He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Anderson, SC on March 18, 1862. He was a Private in Co. D, 1st (Orr's) S. C. Rifles. He was sent to Sullivan's Island near Charleston and later in 1862 to Richmond. There he contracted an unknown illness and left camp for home. He survived until December 29, 1862.

He was married to Luticia Ann, maiden name unknown. Nothing is known of her birth, death, or place of burial.
