Christopher Columbus Roller, also shown as Columbus C. Roller, enlisted in Company B of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV, as a private on December 15, 1862, at Glendale, Mississippi for a period of 1 year, and was mustered in December 31, 1862, at Corinth, Mississippi. The March and April 1863 Muster Roll recorded him as being sick at home in Alabama. He was recorded as present in the May and June 1863 Muster Roll. The September and October 1863 Muster Roll recorded him as absent, prisoner of war since October 26, 1863, [which was when the Battle of Vincent’s Crossroads near Bay Springs, Mississippi was fought.] The November and December 1863 Muster Roll recorded him as having been discharged December 27, 1863, by reason of expiration of term of service. He was discharged at Camp Davies, Mississippi at 38 years of age. A return found in his records stated the following: March and April 1863, Absent, sick at home in Alabama since March 5; October and November 1863, Absent, prisoner of war in the hands of the enemy since the engagement at Vinson’s [Vincent’s] Crossroads, Alabama on October 26, 1863. December 27, 1863, At Camp Davies, Mississippi. He was mustered out of service due to his term of enlistment having expired. A Prisoner of War Record stated he was captured at Clifton on May 27, 1864, and paroled at Savannah, Georgia November 26, 1864.

Christopher Columbus Roller was born July 25, 1822, in Dallas County, Alabama and died August 3, 1896 in Temple, Bell County, Texas. He was the son of Jacob Houston Roller and Violet W. Horton. He first married Jane Katherine Nichols on April 14, 1872, in Wayne County, Tennessee, who was the sister of James and Jasper Nichols who also served in this regiment. Jane Katherine, was the daughter of Joshua Lee Nichols and Elizabeth Cochran, who were married in Bedford County, Tennessee. She was born about 1830 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, and died May 11, 1866, in Martin's Mill, Wayne County, Tennessee. After her death Roller married Catherine Stout in Wayne County, Tennessee and moved to Bell County, Texas in the late 1800's. He died August 3, 1896, in Temple, Bell County, Texas, and was buried in the Carpenter Cemetery near Temple, Texas. The cemetery is on private property next to I-35.
