Enlisted for Civil War service, Aug. 7, 1862, in Company K, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as a private, at Medina, OH(Medina County) for a term of 3 years. He was mustered out with Company K, June 6, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina at the end of the war.

Wife: Caroline, born in Ohio in 1837. She died bewteen
1890 and 1900. Her place of burial is undetermined.

Andrew's name is shown as "Bakeman" on his headstone, and in both the Company K Descriptive List and Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. VII, p. 538, as "Beckman" in the 1850, 1870, 1890 Veterans Schedule, 1900, 1910, and 1920 U.S. Census listings but as "Backman" in the 1880 U.S. Census listing.
