Margaret Elizabeth Hansel, 90, died peacefully Monday evening, February 28, 2011, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. March 05, 2011 at Edgewood Bible Church - Edgewood, Iowa. Friends may also call one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Born in Kingsley, IA, on December 11, 1920, to Roy and Ethel (Fike) Stern, she was the third of thirteen children.

She was raised in the Fredricksburg area and taught country school there after attending McPherson College in Kansas. She later (1965) earned her BA degree from Upper Iowa College.

On June 10, 1945, Margaret married Ishmael Palmer Hansel of Edgewood.

They farmed and raised three children in the Edgewood area.

She taught third and fourth grades in the Edgewood-Colesburg Community Schools, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, quilting, cooking, hikes in the woods, and traveling to visit family and friends.

Margaret was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is survived by two children, Ron Hansel of Anchorage, AK, and Ardith Hansel of Port Angeles, WA; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hansel of Wellman, IA; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren, Shane Hansel (Danielle) and Colton and Jackson of Vinton, IA, Shannon Hansel (Brandi) and Austin and Presley of North Liberty, IA, and Sean Hansel of Wellman, IA; a sister, Doris Tyler; and seven brothers, Russel Stern, Donald Stern, Irven Stern, Alvin Stern, Roy Stern, Robert Stern, and James Stern.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jack Hansel (2003) of Wellman, IA; her husband, Ishmael (2005); two sisters, Beulah Francione and Lois Ilaoa; and two brothers, Galen Stern and Daniel Stern.

She was active in the Edgewood Bible Church, Edgewood Garden Club, Del-Clay Retired School Personnel Association, and volunteer service at the Edgewood Convalescent Home until failing health curtailed those activities three years ago.
