Gene Gardner March 01, 2011

Gene Gardner, age 80, of Burnsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Daisy Brown Gardner. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Martha Jane Elliott. Gene graduated Burnsville High School and entered into the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country, he worked as a mail carrier until his retirement from the U. S. Postal Service. He was also a member and former deacon of West Burnsville Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Glenna Banner Gardner; two sons: Joel Gardner and wife, Virginia "Skeet" Thacker Gardner, of Burnsville and Jerry Gardner and wife, Vivian Pace Gardner, of Conover; two sisters: Charlene Briggs of Asheville and Libby Gardner of Marion; a brother, Jim Gardner of Burnsville and a sister-in-law, Joyce Gardner. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p. m. on Thursday in the West Burnsville Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate. At other times, the family will be at the home.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Hospice for the wonderful care given to Gene and requests memorial donations be made to them at Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, or to the Gideon's International at P. O. Box 264, Burnsville, NC 28714.
