Veteran of the War of 1812 -- Drafted in the War of 1812 and spent several months on "Dorchester Heights" (now South Boston) but never saw the enemy. He was made a Captain of the State Militia and was elected once or more to represent Ashfield in the State Legislature. (from the History of Ashfield, p.346)

Son of Chipman Smith and Mehitable (Haskell) Smith.

He married, first, on Mar 26,1820 at Montague,MA, Jerusha Montague.

He married, second, intentions at Ashfield on Sep 5,1835, Achsah Wing. Note: Vital records indicate her to have been Achsah *King*, but after researching this, I am convinced she is the Achsah Wing, daughter of Isaiah Wing and Zelinda (Allis) Wing, who later married Elisha Smith and John Cranston Ward. Any input is welcome.

Children(by first marriage): Six, including Amanda Smith, Miranda Smith Alden, Horace Montague Smith, and Justus Smith Jr. Only Miranda, Horace, and Justus lived until adulthood. (See Horace's "Reminiscences" in Chapter 21 of the History of Ashfield.)
