Born 8th of eight children of Theodore Gottlieb & Mary Dorothea Kukuck Voigt, he was fostered by Dietrich & Sophia Brand Zahn in Roberts, IL after his mother died just weeks after his birth.

He served as a pilot in W.W. I. After being discharged, he graduated from Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL and was ordained an elder in the Methodist Church.

He married Eleanor Hemstad Dodge on Aug. 27, 1921 in California. They had two children.

Dr. Voigt was elected Bishop in 1952 and served the Dakotas, the Iowa and the (central) Illinois Conferences. He was supervising bishop of the 1964 Methodist Hymnal.

After retiring as bishop in 1964, he served as president of both Simpson College in Indianola,IA and of McKendree College in Galesburg, IL.

Widowed, he died at the home of his married daughter.
