Third of four children of Edward Adam and Mary Ellen Zahn Himmel, she was known in the family as "Little" Mary. She married Martin A. Kaufmann in Buckley on Jan. 21, 1922. They had three sons and a daughter.
Mary attended IL State Normal U, taught school several years. She managed her farm home and helped care for her parents in their old age. She was the source for the 1974 genealogical records of the Zahn family.
