"Elijah Shaffer, 96, of Near Troy Mills Dies; had 176 Descendants" Troy Mills, Feb 28 -Spring Grove township's oldest resident, who died at his home 3 miles south of Troy Mills Tues. night. The son of Jacob and Susanna Aveling Shaffer, he was the last of 10 children. In his early life he was a tanner and sold shoes in PA.He married Charlotte Roland on Sep 20, 1855, at Strawstown, PA. Eleven children were born to this union,5 sons & 6 daughters. In 1860 he came west and with his wife and 3 children he emigrated to Ill. where he lived until 1876 when he came to Ia and settled near Troy Mills. He bought 80 acres of land for which he paid $25/acre. A few years later he bought another 80 acres for $1,200. For 15 years he held the office of road supervisor and was a school dir. At 16 he joined the Lutheran Church and was a leader in church work for yrs. He had voted for 75 yrs.The 1st Pres. for whom he voted was Franklin Pierce, the last was Herbert Hoover. Mrs Shaffer died 9/11/1901, since then he had resided with his children. He is survived by 10 children, 54 grandchildren,110 ggrandchildren and 3 gggrandchildren. The children are: Mrs Susan Cherry, Cedar Rapids;Devilla Shaffer,Walker;Mrs Kate Ondler,SD;Mathias Shaffer,SD; Elias Shaffer,Walker;Mrs Elizabeth Reece,Cedar Rapids;Mrs Laurinda Baily, Dows; Charles and Jacob Shaffer,Central City;Mrs Margaret Mershon,Rowley.Six grandsons were the Pall Bearers:Wayne Baty,Minor Baty, Kenneth Shaffer,Arlie Walton,Philip Hand and Heldon Lacock, also 1 brother-in-law,Abe Roland of Cedar Rapids. Services were held at Christian Church, Troy Mills,IA.
