The son of John & Lydia Hartford (French) Stinson of New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, he served as a private in Company I, 5th New Hampshire Infantry, and was mortally wounded on the second day at the battle of Gettysburg. The date of his death, however, is reported variously as July 28 (tombstone) and August 30. The date shown here is from his military records.
