Author, Pacifist. He was a German Jewish writer, who originally attracted acclaim with his six novels based on his military experiences during World War I, which he called a sin. Following witnessing his books being burnt when the Nazi Forces came to power in Germany, he escaped to Palestine in 1933 and returning to East Berlin at his choice in 1948 after World War II.
