Only son of James H. Botts and Sarah A. Sanders, named for his uncle Lafayette Botts. He was born in Itawamba County, Mississippi after his parents moved from Franklin County Alabama, and shortly after his birth his father died. His widowed mother raised him and his older sisters: Mary Alma Botts 1849-1926 (married Andrew McCreary); Louisiana Botts 1854-1930 (married Christopher Columbus Wright)and Delpha Cordelia Botts 1852-1937 (married James Madison Pounds). Lafayette W. Botts married Rhoda E. Corley/Calley, daughter of Jesse Alfred Corley and Sabra Moreland, 25 July 1878 and they had daughter Florence Elizabeth Botts 1879. She was a still unnamed infant daughter on the 1880 Prentiss County Mississippi census when Lafayette and Rhoda were living with his mother Sarah Botts. Rhoda's mother Sabra Corly was living next door, and after them is Rhoda Pounds (widow of William Alexander Pounds and sister of Sabra Moreland Corley). The Moreland/Botts/Pounds families were always close. The children of Lafayette W. Botts and Rhoda E. Corley/Calley were:

Florence Elizabeth Botts 1879-1974 married John Monroe Pharr, Benjamin Jopp Botts 1881-1951 married Cordelia Pharr, Robert Finis Botts 1885-1943 married Vera Emma Denson, Sarah Alma Botts 1888-?, Ida Belle Botts 1894-1975 married Leonard Burl Lollar.
