PALMER RICH'S SISTER TAKERS HER OWN LIFE; WAS THE SOLE SURVIVING MEMBER OF FAMILY

The last chapter in a tragic family history was written on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs. Angelia Rich Ellis committed suicide by hanging herself in the woodshed of her home in South New Berlin.

Mrs. Ellis was the sole surviving member of the Rich family, the only sister of Ransom and Palmer Rich, and the daughter of Charles and Nancy Rich of Amber Settlement, near South New Berlin. The tragic story of the disappearance of Palmer Rich, which was recently revived in newspapers throughout the state, was but one of the sad happenings of her life. Her other brother, Ransom Rich, was also a suicide as was the first wife of Palmer Rich.

It is believed that brooding over these many tragic deaths had caused Mrs. Ellis to become temporarily demented, and while in this condition, she took her life.

Mrs. Ellis and her daughter, Ruth, have lived for many years in the home on West street where the suicide took place, Mr. Ellis having died about 23 years ago. On Wednesday the daughter went to Mt. Upton on the train leaving South New Berlin about noon. She returned on the north bound train at 3 o'clock.

Arriving at her home, she called her mother but did not find her in the living room nor in any of the lower rooms of the house. Opening the woodshed door, she found her hanging from a rafter.

Harvey Wild and Ray Backus, of South New Berlin, were the first to answer the daughter's cries for help. The body was immediately cut down and Dr. Morgan summoned, but life was extinct.

Mrs. Ellis was about 70 years of age, a quiet and unassuming woman, and one of the most respected residents of the community of which she had been for so long a member. She was a member of the South New Berlin Baptist church, and attended the last service held in the church, before her death, the prayer meeting on last Thursday evening. She had seemed in her usual good health, and no reason can be assigned for her acts, except that already advanced, of sudden derangement.

There are no immediate survivors except the daughter, Miss Ruth Ellis of South New Berlin. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. (Published in the Norwich Sun Thursday, August 25, 1921)

Mrs. Angelia Ellis, whose untimely death occurred Wednesday, August 24, 1921, the particulars of which appeared in these columns last week, was born September 11, 1854, in the town of New Berlin. She was the youngest of the five children born to Ira P. Rich and Fanny Freeman, all of whom have preceded her to the Home above. Frances and Ruth who died in girlhood, Palmer, who disappeared in 1888, Ransom, who died in 1900. The deceased spent the greater portion of her younger life on the Rich farm at Amblerville which was purchased by her grandparents, Chas. and Nancy Rich in the early part of the 17th century, about 1812.

December 20, 1882, she married Benjamin Ellis, whose death occurred May 30, 1897. One daughter, Ruth, was born to them. Mrs. Ellis was a quiet, retiring woman, highly esteemed by all who knew her, an earnest Christian and for many years a faithful and active member of the Baptist church in this village. No near relatives survive aside from the daughter above mentioned for whom much sympathy is expressed in her loneliness and sorrow.

The funeral was held from her late home Saturday at 2 o'clock p.m., Rev. L.E. Wheeler officiating. Burial was made in the Rich cemetery at Amblerville by the side of her husband. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. (Published in the South New Berlin Bee)
