Anchorage resident Goldsmith "Scotty" Burrell, 81, died May 10, 2007, of cancer at Providence Extended Care. A service with a viewing was held at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel, 1707 S. Bragaw St.

Mr. Burrell was born July 17, 1925, in Chester, Pa., where he attended Chester Public School. He served in the Army and Navy during World War II. In 1974, he became a resident of Anchorage. He was employed in the early 1950s as a wood-barrel maker. He was a master mechanic in Chester at Chrysler Corp., on the auto assembly line, and Local 413 in Chester. He accepted a job as a superintendent on the pipeline in Valdez for Fluor Corp., and also worked in Saudi Arabia. He returned to Alaska and worked as a supervisor for Veco during the Valdez oil spill cleanup. He later became head of security for the city of Anchorage in Mayor Tony Knowles' administration. Mayor Knowles honored him by declaring July 20, 1984, Scotty Burrell Day for many things, including being a prisoner of war during World War II. Shortly thereafter, he became the commander of VFW Post 10252, serving two terms. He remained an active member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge, as well as a supportive member of AMVETS. Mr. Burrell enjoyed cooking, animals, billiards and helping organize special events. "Scotty enjoyed being with people," his family wrote. "He was always willing to help those who were in need. He was loved by all, especially his grandchildren, and will be missed. "As a young man he was united in holy matrimony to the late Sarah E. Richardson. God blessed this union with the birth of 11 children: daughters, Cardrina Manning and Charmaine Burrell of Chester, and the late Eloise Burrell; and sons, Livingston-Mohammed, Ricardo and Derrick, all of Chester, Ronnell, Junious, Romaine and Walter Burrell, all of Anchorage, and the late Zachary Burrell."

He is survived by other family members, Yvonne Cunningham, Bernice Henson, Parthenia Ponder, Lafenus (Petey) Derrickerson, Kilroy Scott, Ronnie Byrd and Sabrina, Rose Anna, Christopher, Wayne and Anthony Briscoe, all of Chester; 103 grandchildren, 99 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends.
