Malvin B. Slocum died at his home in South Sioux City, Dec. 2, 1904, aged 55 years.

He was born in the state of New York May 3, 1849, and was the son of Harry and Maria Slocum who settled on the southeast quarter of section ten in Windom township in 1857. There were five children in the family: Orville who later resided in Austin for many years, Alma, the late Mrs. George Sutton of Rose Creek, Newell, now of Dakota, Malvin B. just deceased, and Edward, now in Idaho.

Malvin received his early education in the district school. In March, 1865, when only 16 years old, he enlisted in Co. G. First Battalion, Minn. Infantry Vols., and went South and served until the close of war and was mustered out with the regiment in July, 1865. After his return from the war he attended school in Austin and fitted himself for a teacher. He engaged in teaching and farming until 1870 when he began buying grain in Rose Creek and for fifteen years was in the grain and lumber business. For several years he was town clerk and also justice of the peace.

In 1872, Mr. Slocum married Miss Martha J. Hardy of Red Rock. She died January 5, 1874, leaving one child that died in infancy.


Feb. 1, 1877, he married Miss Amelia Houghton of Lyle. Their only child, a son, died last August.

Deceased was a prominent and influential citizen of Mower county. The family moved to Holt county, Neb., in 1885 and to South Sioux City in September, 1891.
