James was the son of George Washington Withem and Maria Tinkham; husband of Nancy Belle Beaman. They had 11 children: Lillie, Edith, Effie, Oliver, George, Guy, William, Margaret, James, Eva and Florence.

James was a well-known apple grower. He was one of the first to develop the orchards in Raglan Township, east of Mondamin, Iowa in the Leoss Hills. He was known for his sorghum (which may have led to his nickname "Sticky Jim"), which he and Nancy processed and sold throughout Harrison County. They were religious people and were very respected.

James was the older brother of my great-grandfather, Charles Wesley Withem.
