Alfred was the son of Lucy Fontaine Thompson and Hugh Kerr, he married Susan Clayton Steele on June 14, 1854 in Goliad, TX, they had ten children: William Herndon, Benjamin Fontaine, James Slaughter, Mary Amanda, Gabriel Felder, Henry Lee, Lucy Fontaine, Margaret Steele, Susan Clayton and Alfred Benjamin Jr.
