Born in DÖNHOF Village, alias Pfaffenkutter, Kamyshin district, Saratov Province.
Famine in this area 1891-1892.Legler family leaves Russia. On his immigration papers he lists the starting out place or village as Domhoff, Russland. On immigration record at port of New York, he lists his name as Friedr Leichler. Arrived at the port of New York, Apr of 1892, on the "California", Captain: Dröscher.
A daughter, Amolie born in 1891, is listed as arriving with the family in New York.
Family originally went to Lehigh, Kansas, then Nebraska. Then moved to Akron, Washington Co., Colorado. Fred came ahead of the family to Glenwood City area to work in the lumber camps. He was a logger. In 1900, possibly just a day or two after US census was taken on June 1-2,1900, the family moved to Glenwood City, Wisconsin, traveling in a caravan of covered wagons with other families. Some of the people traveling with the caravan turned North near the Minnesota boarder and went up to South Dakota. Legler family first lived S. of town, out next to the Ole Borgen farm, and near the Nels Slottevig farm. Then in 1913 Fred Legler bought the house on the West side of Glenwood City, WI. Out at the Y on 128. Last place on the East side of the road, just before the Y. This house burned down in 1920. Everything in the house was lost, but no one died in the fire.
Fred suffered a stroke a year or 2 before his death and was bed ridden until his death in 1931.
