DOWNS MAYOR KILLED BY CAR

Frederick Wilcox Struck While Walking on Highway.

Frederirk Wilcox, 77, mayor of Downs, was instantly killed by an automobile at noon Tuesday as he wan walking on route 39 at the east edge of Downs.

The car which struck him was driven by J. H. Wrigley of Toulon, accompanied by O. D. Morgan of Toulon. Otis Cawby of Bloomington, in another car at the scene, witnessed the accident.

Mr. Wilcox, who lived alone at his farm home in the east outskirts of Downs, was returning home from a lunch room.

At the inquest held Tuesday afternoon at the courthouse here, Mr. Cawby, who was driving west, testified that Mr. Wilcox just before the accident had been on the left side of the pavement, as prescribed by law, but stepped over to the right of the Cawby car instead of getting off the pavement to the left.

After passing Mr. Wilcox, and seeing the other car approaching from the west, Mr. Cawby looked in his rear vision mirror and saw the accident. Mr. Wrigley testified that, presuming Mr. Wilcox would stay on the right or south side, turned to the center of the pavement to give clearance, but that Mr. Wilcox stepped in front of his car. Coroner Lloyd Shoemaker conducted the inquest, the jury returning a verdict of accidental death.

Mr. Wilcox was born Jan. 27, 1856 in Pennsylvania, a son of Mose and Anna Wilcox, and came to Downs with his parents when he was a child. He was married to Melissa Oswalt March 1, 1877. Mrs. Wilcox died in 1910.

Surviving are three children, Bert Wlicox, Mrs. Marguerite McCain of Gridley and Mrs. Sylvia Banner of Leroy, and one brother, Oswald, of Downs.

Mr. Wilcox was elected mayor of Downs last spring.
