William J. Quirk Sr.

William J. Quirk, Sr., age 80, of Erie, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011, at St. Vincent Health Center. Bill was born July 7, 1930 in Erie, the son of the late John V. and Carrie Mangues Quirk.

A lifelong Erie resident, Bill was a 1948 graduate of Cathedral Prep and a 1959 graduate of Gannon College. He received his Masters degree in Education from Edinboro University.

During the Korean War, Bill served with the U.S. Air Force as a navigator with Air Rescue and later joined the Air Force Reserves, finally retiring in 1981 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 30 years of service.

Bill was a Physics and Chemistry teacher with the Erie School District, retiring in 1988 from Academy High School. He was a past president of the Erie Education Association and was treasurer of the Military Officers Association.

Bill and his wife Pat were very active members of St. Peter Cathedral where Bill served as a lector and Eucharistic minister.

He loved to build and repair things for his family and friends, and in the minds of his family, "He certainly was the World's Greatest husband, father, and PaPa!" He will be missed by many.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn M. Quirk and two brothers, John "Bud" Quirk and Charles "Chuck" Quirk.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Patricia Hiller Quirk; two daughters, Julie DeJarnette and her husband, David of Erie and Elizabeth Cullum and her husband, Curtis of Augusta, Ga.; three sons, William J. Quirk, Jr. and his wife, Carol of Whitesboro, N.Y., John C. Quirk and his wife, Wendy of Cedar Park, Texas, and James P. Quirk, Sr. and his wife, Tina of Erie. He is the brother of Sr. Christine Quirk, SSJ of Erie and is also survived by ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Cathedral.

Entombment will be in Mary Queen of Peace Mausoleum.
