His maternal uncle and aunt, Adriaen Henderson and Susanna, acted as Godparents. Cornelius was named in the typical Dutch fashion for his paternal grandfather, Cornelis Van Hovgem of Midwout (Flatbush), Kings County, Long Island, New York.
Cornelius married Marretje "Maria" Buijs (Buys), daughter of Mattys (Matthew) and Elizabeth "Lizbet" Buijs of Kings County, Long Island, NY. Cornelius and Maria were married on May 6, 1738 at the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City. They lived in Somerset County, NJ. From 1739 until 1754, Cornelius and Maria (Buys) Vanover had five (5) children who were baptized at various Reformed Dutch Churches in Somerset County, NJ area. The family had moved from Somerset County to Sussex County, NJ by June 1, 1761 when they first appear in the Sussex County, NJ records.
Cornelius died at the age of 53 years.
