Born in 1948, Donald was stricken with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at age 5. He moved to Southampton NY shortly after graduating from Memorial School in Totowa NJ. He was enrolled at Southampton High School, and was taught by a tutor as well as by a prototype of the modern day speakerphone which was placed in each classroom for the subject he was enrolled in (this was cutting edge technology in those times and Western Electric used this as their experiment. It worked!). He graduated from Southampton High School. Sadly, he succumbed to the disease at age 20, which was a long time to live before all the breakthroughs that the MDA has made since. He was survived by his parents Andrew and Helen Smarsh, his sisters Sonia and Barbara, his brother Andrew, his nieces and nephews, his relatives, and the many loving and caring friends he had made during his short lifetime. P.S. Thank you Jerry Lewis and the MDA. Your organization was there during every aspect of his life, everytime he needed special equipment, everytime he wanted to go to camp, and whenever he needed special caring.
