Big Timber Pioneer, March 7, 1907
Henry Bartels, one of the earliest settlers on Sweet Grass creek near Howie, died at his home Thursday evening, Feb. 28th, at the age of 82 years. For the past two years Mr. Bartels had suffered from asthma. About January 1st he contracted a severe cold, which in connection with the asthma, produced his death.
Henry Bartels was born at Hillside, Germany. When 23 years of age he came to America, first locating in Iowa. He later emigrated to Missouri, after which in 1892, he moved to Montana and bought a ranch on Sweet Grass creek, where he resided up to the time of his death.
In 1977, he was united in marriage to Miss Rika Wuimback, who survives him. He was the father of nine children, three girls and six boys, four of whom are living.
