In 1846, the family was found in Hillsborough Co., FL.

Between 1846 and 1858, Joshua was living in Gasden Co., FL.

He moved in 1858 to Hernando Co., FL.

Joshua was a 2nd Lieutenant with the Third Florida Infantry, Company C, enlisting 19 July 1861 at Brooksville, Hernando Co., Florida. He was elected 1st Lt. on 8 May 1862. He resigned 29 October 1864.

Joshua's brother, Eli W., also served in the same unit. He died 26 Sept. 1863 in a Montgomery, Alabama hospital from dysentery. Eli is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.

Joshua married Sarah Ann Hedrick (Sally) 12 Jan. 1865 in Brooksville, Hernando Co., Florida. They had eight children who are listed on Sallie's memorial.
