Nicholas was born in 1813 in Berkeley County, Virginia. In 1820 Morgan County was formed from Berkeley and Hampshire counties.

Nicholas' father was Daniel Ambrose and his mother was Sophia Marquart. His paternal grandfather was William Henry Ambrose and his paternal grandmother was Sarah. Nicholas had two brothers, Nelson b 1808 d 1880 and William Henry b 1814 d 1898.

He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters. Mathias b 1818 d 1905, Susan b 1821 d 1856, Jacob b 1822 d 1903, Catherine b 1827 d 1887, Peter b 1829 d 1896 and Elizabeth b 1830 d 1872.

He died at the age of 51 in 1864 in Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, West Virginia. He was buried in Dutch or Deutsh (German) Cemetery, Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, WV.

Update May 3, 2016:

I was told by my Uncle Dick Ambrose as told to him by his father, Jimmy Ambrose, Nicolas is buried in the southwest corner of the Old Dutch Cemetery at the corner of Rt 9 and Green St. There is no longer a stone to mark his grave.
