Mrs. Esther Schaeffer, widow of David Schaeffer, died on the old homestead in Maxatawny, near Kutztown, Monday morning, in the 77th year of her age. Deceased was a daughter of Solomon Christ. She and Mr. Schaeffer were married May 7, 1848, and the following April they moved to the farm, where they lived ever since and reared five children, all of whom survive. They are: Superintendent of Public Instruction, N. C. Schaeffer, of Lancaster; Rev. William C. Schaeffer, Ph. D., of Chambersburg; Dr. Charles D. Schaeffer, of town; Attorney D. Nicholas Schaeffer, of Reading, and James Schaeffer, residing on the homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Schaeffer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary May 7, 1898, when their five children and 18 grandchildren gathered on the old homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Schaeffer were widely known and highly respected and were always prominent in every movement for the good of the community; worked hard in their younger days and prospered so that they could send each of their five sons through college; saw them established in life, married and respected, as were their parents before them.
