LOUISVILLE — Dr. Edgar Byron Morgan Sr., 92, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Jefferson Place in Louisville.
He grew up in Paducah and Symsonia, Ky., where he graduated valedictorian of his high school class. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in World War II, during which time he met and married his wife of 66 yeas, Katherine. He also was a graduate of Murray State University and the University of Louisville Medical School, where he later was instrumental in the forming of Family Practice as a specialty.
Dr. Morgan was well-known in many different arenas during his lifetime. He practiced medicine for nearly 50 years in Crescent Hill and was president of the Kentucky Medical Association and the Jefferson County Medical Society. He became an accomplished horseman with a successful racing stable and breeding farm. He was the founding president of Kentucky Harness Horseman's Association and later was inducted into the Kentucky Harness Horseman's Hall of Fame. At 65, he began his career as a competitive marathon runner, where he became well-known throughout the world and ran until he was 89. Later, he became an active and involved member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Louisville. He was a member and deacon of First Christian, Crescent Hill Christian and Beargrass Christian churches.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Rea Deeb Morgan, his son, Dr. Kirk Deeb Morgan (Sharon), and his sister, Judith Morgan Boren Wittenberg.
Survivors include his children, Dr. E. Byron Morgan Jr. (Genny) and Katherine "Tassie" Morgan Sumner (Doug), both of Louisville, and Mark Lewis Morgan (Joni) of Danville; 13 grandchildren, Laura Morgan Burke (Chad), Michael Morgan( Lynnelle), Austin Sumner Nelson (Chris), Scott Morgan (Jessica), Morgan Sumner, Christopher Morgan (Lillian), Melissa Morgan Durham (Trevor), McCauley Sumner Adams (Phillip), Daniel Morgan, Bennett Sumner Rolan (Blake), Patrick Morgan and Samuel Morgan; one stepgrandson, James Dunn (Lucy); great-granddaughters, Katherine Ross Nelson and Morgan Ruth Nelson; step-great-grandson, Jameson Dunn; two nieces, Nancy Stuelke (Bill) and Rusti Schilling; a nephew, Norman Burton (Connie); and many great-nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to especially thank Doris Jean Washington for her loving care and devotion for nearly 50 years.
The funeral service will be noon Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
