Richmond was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Lancaster, of Charles County, Maryland. He was a printer, and was employed by American and the Baltimore Star for 24 years. Richmond served his apprenticeship in the office of John Cox and in the office of the Baltimorean, after which he secured employment in the composing room of the American. He was editor and publisher of The Broadax, a one-sheet paper, which was circulated among Baltimore printers for years.
