Son of the late Dietrich and Anna Catherine Topp Ahlers, he was the widower of Marion Ahlers, who died in 1999. Additionally, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Ahlers. He was survived by his daughters, Geri Heath and Patricia Dunkeeton (John); son, Edward G. Ahlers (Joan); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives. He was a veteran of WWII (United States Army). He was a retired supervisor with the New York City Transit Authority.
