Marcellus Melanthon Gillespie was the youngest child and only son of Rev. Jacob Gillespie. As a six-year-old, he crossed the plains with his father, step-mother and six older sisters.

Marcellus M. and Rachel Salina (Goodpasture) Gillespie were married on November 2, 1865 at the home of Elizabeth Goodpasture, near where Valley River Center now stands. A. Bonnett and John Gillespie Day were listed in the Lane County, OR Marriage Book 2 page 187 as the witnesses.

MARCELLUS M. GILLESPIE

Is a son of Jacob Gillespie, and was born in La Fayette county, Missouri, January 26, 1846. He crossed the plains with his parents in 1852, and settled in this county on the sixth of October of that year. He settled on his present farm in the fall of 1866, which is located north from Eugene City four miles. He married Salina Goodpasture, November 2, 1865. She died November 4, 1869. Mr. Gillespie married his second wife Damaris T. Benson January 21, 1874. He has two children by first marriage and four by second.

Rachel Salina Goodpasture was the daughter of Lane County pioneers Alexander Goodpasture and Elizabeeth (Moss) Goodpasture. Alexander Goodpasture died 26 Apr 1862. On 25 Jul 1867, widow Elizabeth Goodpasture married widower Rev. Jacob Gillespie, the father of Marcellus M. Gillespie. This made Salina and Marcellus Gillespie step-siblings as well as husband and wife.

Marcellus Gillespie and Rachel "Sally" Salina (Goodpasture) Gillespie had two daughters before her death from tuberculosis on 06 Nov 1869.

Their eldest daughter, Elmira Gillespie, died at the age of ten. The younger girl, Alcester Gillespie, died three days short of her 16th birthday. They are both buried near their mother in Gillespie Cemetery.

On 21 Jan 1874 Marcellus married Damaris Tandy Benson. She was the daughter of Edward Benson, who died in Missouri. Her mother was pioneer widow Sarah "Sally" Scott (Tandy) Benson McClure who crossed the plains with her young daughters in tow.

Marcellus and Damaris Gillespie had five children: Minda, Marcellus, Walter, Ralph and Jacob.

Marcellus and Damaris Gillespe farmed in the area near Cal Young Middle School, just off of Gilham Road. Today a portion of this same land has been in Gillespie descendant ownership since 1865.

GILLESPIE - At the Mercy hospital, November 10, 1922, M. M. Gillespie, of Eugene, at the age of 77 years. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Henry Nixon (should be Dixon), of Eugene, and four sons, M. and W. B. Gillespie of Lorane, and Ralph and Jacob of Norkenzie. The funeral will be held Monday at 10:30 A.M. from the Veatch chapel. Interment will be at the Gillespie cemetery.
