Louise R. Mellenthin
May 26, 1920 - Feb. 10, 2011
SOUTH BEND - Louise's life began May 26, 1920, in South Bend. Her proud parents were Andrew and Alma Pfaffenbach. After a brief illness at LaPorte Hospital, Louise went to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 10, 2011. On July 19, 1941, Louise married her true love, Harold A. Mellenthin, who preceded her in death after 61 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol. She was employed outside the home as a bridal consultant, worked at Levine's Boston Store, and retired from Allis Chalmers. If ever there was a person who epitomized living life to the fullest, it was Louise. She was lively and fun, and generously gave of her time and homemade baked goods. She could always be counted on to tell jokes and leave everyone with smiles on their faces. At 90 years young, Louise was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Circle 7, Evening Circle, President of St. John's Seniors, Vice Queen of Classy Red Hatters, Healthport of LaPorte Hospital, and was a volunteer at St. John's Thrift Shop. She found peace and joy working for hours in her yard, nurturing her flowers and also cross-stitching, needle-pointing, and making crafts for gifts. Louise is survived by her loving children, Allan (Cindy) Mellenthin of Zelienople, PA, Janis Guckenberger of St. Joseph, MI, and Larry Mellenthin of Lincolnville, Maine, as well as nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, February 14, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church, 111 Kingsbury Avenue, LaPorte, IN, with Rev. Ronald Brauer officiating. Burial of ashes will be held at Patton Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be today, February 13, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 111 Kingsbury Avenue, LaPorte, IN 46350. Online condolences may be sent to www.haverstockfuneralhome.com.
