William was married to Mary Ann "Mollie" Martin of Wallace, MO on June 14, 1893. They had six children: Elizabeth, William Armsterd (not named for his grandfather Armstead Hurst - but for a Dr. Armsterd), Clifton Faris, Genevieve, James Martin and Robert Henry. Elizabeth, Genevieve, Jim and Bill are also buried at Westlawn Cemetery; Clif and Bob are buried at neighboring Armstrong Cemetery, Rushville.
William remained on the Hurst family farm throughout most of his life, initially farming with his father - and later with his sons. He was a member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church and later, the DeKalb Christian Church; he served as director of the Sleepy Hollow school district.
Late in life William suffered a significant head injury in a farming related accident (from a hay bale falling from the barn's hay loft). Sometime afterward he and wife Mollie purchased a small home at the edge of DeKalb, just south of the school, where he lived for the remaining six or seven years of his life. He had four grandchildren, Mary Lou Frakes, Van Hurst, Robert Lee Hurst and Betty Grace (who was born three months before his death.)
