Matilda Faris was the eldest of the eight children of Job and Elizabeth (Summers) Faris. She married Armstead Hurst, son of Henry and Nancy (Staggs) Hurst on December 9, 1841 in Fleming County and the following spring set out for Missouri - first settling north of Weston in the Salem community, where their first child - Mary - was born.
In 1843 Armstead and Matilda preempted land in Bloomington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri (eventually 220 acres) located halfway between DeKalb and Rushville on "the Old North Road." Their other ten children were born in the home they built there. Prior to the Civil War, their principal crop was hemp - used for making rope and twine.
Armstead and Matilda were early members of the Sugar Creek Christian Church and later belonged to the DeKalb Christian Church after its establishment. Armstead died in 1897 and son William (and wife Mary Ann "Mollie" Martin) took over the farm, on which Matilda continued to live until her death in 1909.
A brief obituary in the DeKalb Tribune of February 19, 1909 reads: MRS. MATILDA HURST died February 18 at her home near DeKalb. She was 89 yr 3 mo 25 days. She was born in Fleming County, Kentucky October 23, 1819. Her maiden name was Faris. Shortly after their marriage they left Kentucky for Platte County, Missouri. Eleven children were born, 5 boys, 6 girls. Five children died. Her husband died April 20, 1897. Funeral conducted at DeKalb.
