Joseph married Elizabeth Ann Patterson, on 14 February 1831, in Ohio. She was born on 30 November 1813, and her father was Samuel Patterson. Joseph and Eliza had at least five children: William (born 20 September 1832); Samuel P. (born 26 September 1839); Mary Jane (born 12 April 1843); Elizabeth Ellen (born 7 January 1845); and Margaret Ann (born 20 May 1852). They also had at least two children who died young. When Joseph’s father William left Ohio and migrated to Decatur County, Indiana, around 1835, Joseph and his family decided to remain in Butler County, Ohio. But sometime between 1850 and 1860, Joseph and his family left Ohio, and they moved Enfield, Illinois, which is in White County. Joseph’s father William was living there, at that time.
