William was the son of James Polk "Jim" and Frances Pearl "Hamby" Lankford. He married Lela Frances. His WWI Registration form shows his birth date to be 20 Nov 1879, not 1878. Sometime just after the turn of the century, William Curtis Lankford, the eldest son of James Polk Lankford left Mississippi and went to Texas. He settled at Gunter, Grayson County, Texas and lived there for the rest of his life. In the following years, a number of the Averys and Lankfords made the trip to Texas. Some of them stayed while others returned to Mississippi. Those who stayed, in addition to William Curtis Lankford, were Dora and Jim Mills, Charley Lankford, Ben Lankford, Henry and Minnie Avery, and Graydon and Bessie Avery. William and Frances became the parents of 3 children including one set of twins.
At one time he was a City Marshall of Gunter, TX and was also a farmer.
