Leroy A. Staller, also nicknamed "Roy" or "Scrappy" Staller, suffered a severe injury as a child when he took a lunch to his father working at the Auburn Brick Plant and accidentally became caught in moving machinery which tore off his arm. Quick action saved his life but not his arm, but he never left his handicap lessen the quality of his life, thus his nickname of "Scrappy".
He went on to become a decent baseball player for the Auburn team and also later opened his own Ice Cream parlor/restaurant.
Although his death certificate lists his mother's maiden name as Long, other records correctly list it as Dewald.
