Thelma Farley, 91, passed away June 20, 1999. She was born at Frenchboro, March 15, 1908, the daughter of James and Lizzie (Lunt) Thurlow.

She was a member of the Olsen Memorial Church of Bass Harbor for many years. The last years of her life she attended the Tremont Congregational Church. After her husband passed away, she decided she wanted to be nearer people, so at age 83, she sold her home and moved into the Ridge Apartments in Southwest Harbor, which she enjoyed very much with friends near and many activities. Thelma worked 40 years at the W.M. Underwood sardine factory as a packer, while raising her family. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star Lodge - Tremont Chapter No. 164 and a member of the Sewing Circle at Bass Harbor. She was very artistic and did a lot of fancywork and sewing for the circle, making quilts and fancywork of all kinds. She started a May basket project which grew and greatly benefited the church. She taught the members to make the baskets and she would make the flowers to decorate them. Thelma enjoyed working and while she lived at the Ridge Apartments, she cooked and took food to the shut-ins and visited whenever she could, always trying to keep busy and helping others. She liked people and enjoyed life. She and her husband, Edwin, were married for 56 years.

Thelma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Elwin Hodgdon of Seal Cove; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Cathy Farley of Bernard; six grandchildren, Michael and Gary Farley, Noreen Wass, Evelyn Wehifritz, Linda Mace, Janice Hodgdon; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held June 23, 1999, at Head of Harbor Congregational Church in Bass Harbor, with the Rev. Wayne Buchanan officiating. Interment was at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Contributions in Thelma's memory may be made to the Head of Harbor Church, Building Repair Fund, c/o Carol Farley, P.O. Box 6, Bernard, ME 04612. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.
