The youngest child of ten of Nathaniel Fox (1805-1887) and Kitturah (McFarland) Fox (1812-1877), Ruth was born and raised on a farm near New London, Iowa. At age 17 on the Fourth of July she married Charles Pearsey Walker, 8 years her elder, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

She was the mother of eight: Samuel Nathaniel Walker (1869-1957), Everna Ida "Vernie" (Walker) Frizzell (1873-1951), Albert E. Walker (1876-1876), Thomas "Tom" Walker (1877-1968), Charles Leander "Lee" Walker (1881-1968), Flossie Zella (Walker) Russell (1884-1968), James G. "Jim" Walker (1887-1973), and John H. Walker (1889-1890).

Ruth contracted tuberculoses sometime before 1883 when the family moved to Texas, ostensibly to help with the disease. They returned to Iowa soon afterwards, moved from near New London, Iowa, to near Newport, Iowa, in Louisa County.

The Morning Sun News, page 4, January 2, 1890; Morning Sun, Louisa County, Iowa:

Again the death messenger has been in our midst and darkened the home of Chas. Walker by taking away his wife last Saturday night by that dreaded disease consumption. Funeral today at the house at 10 o'clock, after which the remains will be taken to New London for interment. She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her loss. We hope to give further particulars next week. The husband, family and friends have the sympathy of the entire community in this, their sad bereavement.
