Benjamin A. Rankin, age 18 years, was enumerated at Lewis County, Missouri, August 24, 1850, with Catharine Rankin 60, Mary H. Rankin 31, Rebecca F. Rankin 26, Harriett W. Rankin 21, V. M. Dawson 27 and a Carpenter, Eliza S. Dawson 24, Catharine E. Dawson 3 and Elzia E. Dawson 1.

Benjamin A. Rankin was enlisted and mustered in by Robert Robinson, Captain and Provost Marshall, Middle District of California, into Company A (New), First Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers, at Sacramento, California, March 3, 1865. Alexander B. Nixon, Surgeon of Board of Medical Examiners, Middle District of California, was the Examining Surgeon of Recruit Rankin at his muster in. At his enlistment Benjamin stated that he was born in Lewis County, Missouri, and he was 32 years old and by occupation a Carpenter. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 9½ inches, with Florid complexion, Hazel eyes, and Brown hair. From August 1865 to January 1866, he was on duty at work for the Chief Quartermaster, at Fort Whipple, Arizona Territory. Private Rankin mustered out at a Presidio, San Francisco, California, May 22, 1866 (Rankin Compiled Military Service Record, NARA; Orton, 95).

Benjamin A. Rankin, age 37 years and a Miller, was enumerated at Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, July 12, 1870. Benjamin A. Rankin, age 47 years and a Clerk in a lumber yard, was enumerated at Menlo Park, San Mateo, County, California, June 9, 1880. Benjamin Asbury Rankin registered to vote at San Mateo County in 1866/79/90/92/96. Benjamin filed from California for a Civil War veteran's pension January 2, 1896 and received application No. 1,172,946 and certificate No. 986,489. At age 69 years he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Soldiers, April 12, 1902. When admitted Benjamin stated that his occupation was a Clerk.

Benjamin A. Rankin died at the Soldiers' Home at Santa Monica Saturday. He was a pioneer of San Mateo county, coming to this city in 1856. A few years ago, his health failed, and he went to Southern California. He enlisted in the California regulars and served during the Civil War. For a number of years, he was engaged in the lumber business here and was well known in business circles. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Masons and Grand Army of the Republic. Rankin was 70 years of age and a native of Massachusetts. At one time, a few years ago, during a period of litigation, lie was in charge of the Ben Lomond Winery.
