William was the son of Willis Burdette and Nancy Boone.

William married Elizabeth Doolittle, December 3, 1840 in Kanawha, Virginia, which is now West Virginia. In 1870, they left Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia to Clay County, Missouri, for a short period of time, before they settled in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas. They were the parents of 13 children.
