Emma Vines was born 1866 on her father's plantation, "Vinedale" near Pinetops, Edgecombe County, NC, the 8th of 9 known children (2 boys/7 girls) born to wealthy planter John Allen Vines and his wife, Prudence Selina Ruffin.

She was the paternal grandchild of Charles Vines & Sophia Tyson of Edgecombe; and reportedly the gr-grandchild of Col. Samuel Vines and Mary "Polly" May of Pitt County. She is believed to be a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Capt. Samuel Vines (ca. 1686-1741) of England who first came to North Carolina and settled near Bath, Beaufort County, NC. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of wealthy planter, Samuel Ruffin and Mary Ann Johnston of "Sycamore Grove" plantation in Edgecombe.

On May 31, 1877, 20-yr old Emma married 23-year old Turner Bynum Sugg, son of Dr. George Coe Pender Sugg & Nancy Bynum. Their only child, "Little Mary" Sugg was born in August 1878.

On June 11, 1879, Emma died at age 22, leaving her husband and 10-month old child. The infant would die 3 months later. [THE 2ND PHOTO SHOWN HERE IS THE GRAVESTONE OF "LITTLE MARY" THE ONLY DAUGHTER OF EMMA VINES & TURNER BYNUM SUGG - Memorial# 63481889.]

Her widowed husband, Turner Bynum Sugg, would marry again in 1877, taking as his bride Catherine "Kate" Woodard, by whom 9 known children were born. Turner died in 1918 at age 64.
