* FOUNDER - "VINEDALE" PLANTATION, PINETOPS, NC *

John Allen Vines was born 1815 in Edgecombe County, NC, the eldest of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to wealthy farmer Charles Vines (ca. 1790-1823) and his wife, Sophia Tyson who built "Myrtle Grove" Plantation (reportedly as a wedding gift for his youngest son, Charles L. S. Vines).

His sister Fanny (ca. 1818) is believed to have died young. His other sister, Letitia "Tessia" Vines (ca. 1816 - aft. 1880) married farmer John Newton Jr. and was widowed before 1860, raising 4 children on her own in Falklands, Pitt County. Youngest brother, Charles L. S. Vines inherited "Myrtle Grove" and lived there with his wife, Martha Ann Williams, and their 7 children. Charles sold "Myrtle Grove" to the Hearn family after his wife's death in 1882. The brother's homes were just a few miles apart in Edgecombe County, and between them they owned over 2000 acres, a sawmill and a school as well, called Vinesville Male and Female Seminary.

Of his father, Charles Vines, it has been written: "The Vines family had enjoyed wealth and prominence in Beaufort County since the early 1700's, when Charles Vines' great, great grandfather, Capt. Samuel Vines (b. 1686, d. 1741) came over from England and settled near Bath, North Carolina. By the time construction on Myrtle Grove began, the Vines family had acquired large amounts of land throughout Beaufort, Pitt and Edgecombe counties."

Charles Vines is oft reported to be the son of Col. Samuel Vines and Mary "Polly" May of Pitt County, NC; but his date of birth precedes his parent's marriage date of 1802 by some 12 years; and, if Charles' date of birth is correctly placed as 1790, Col. Samuel Vines would be too young to be his father. Nonetheless, most information found by this researcher places John Allen Vines as son Charles Vines, son of of Col. Samuel Vines of Pitt County. I welcome any corrections to this information.

John Allen Vines married Prudence Selina Ruffin on December 24, 1837, when they were both 22 years old. She was the daughter of wealthy planter Samuel Ruffin of "Sycamore Grove" plantation in Edgecombe.

The couple would establish their own plantation, "Vinedale" in Edgecombe County where they would become parents to 9 known children (2 boys/7 girls). Sadly, two of his daughters died young, and his only two sons would perish in the Civil War leaving no heirs.

Their children included:
* Mary Sophia Vines (1840-1913)
* Charles Vines, CSA (1842-1864)
* Samuel Ruffin Vines, CSA (1844-1864)
* Olivia Vines (1846-1894)
* Salina "Lina" Vines (1849-1881)
* Prudence Vines (ca. 1850-aft 1880)
* Helen Vines (1852-1856)
* Emma Vines (1856-1878)
* Linda Vines (1858-1928)

By 1860, "Vinedale" was one of the most prosperous farms in Edgecombe County, and John was one of the larger slave owners holding 65 slaves on the plantation. The war would greatly reduce his wealth, but not break him financially, and "Vinedale" survived Reconstruction intact and a still prosperous holding. Although, perhaps the same could not be said for John, as he buried both his sons Charles and Samuel, who died 2 months apart in 1864, in the waning months of the war.

John Allen Vines died August 12, 1872 at age 57. His wife of 35 years passed 3 years later in 1875 at age 59. With no sons to inherit, "Vinedale" passed to his youngest daughter, Linda, who with her husband James Thomas Cobb, would make "Vinedale" thrive into the 20th Century.

As for his surviving children, Mary Sophia married merchant Reading Southerland Sugg in 1865 and had 1 child. She and her husband removed to Kings Mountain in Cleveland County, NC, but both were buried here in Maplewood when they died. Daughter Oliva married Dr. Edwin Barnes, CSA and is buried here with her husband and children. Salina "Lina" Vines never married and died in 1881 and is buried here. Prudence died sometime after 1880; and Emma died in 1879.

Update regarding John Vines' lineage. Another FAG contributor (K. Harrell) has offered up the following information which might help other researchers document who John Vines' ancestors are (Note: Roger Kammerer is a well-known Eastern NC researcher and reporter.):

"I have done some research on the Vines family. My records show that Charles is not a direct descendant of Col Samuel Vines b 1775 d 1863 and married to Mary "Polly" May.

Pitt County Superior Court records for the Feb term 1864 shows a partition against John King Executor of Col Samuel Vines Estate. This court record shows the following children: Allie, Eliza, Ann, Emily, Betsy, Polly, Clara, Patsy, Nancy, and Samuel. There is no mention of Charles.

I also have a family chart prepared by R Kammerer of Pitt County. His chart does show Charles L Vines. His line appears to be Capt Samuel Vines b 1686 d 1741 Bath NC., William Vines (Constable), John Vines d Pitt County married Lucy ??, Charles Vines married Sophia Tyson, Charles L. Vines b 1820 d 1885 married Martha Ann ??.
I have no proof for this lineage chart."
