Hugh Nickerson and wife, Serepta, came west to Linn County in 1851. There are online stories about him from Oregon records posted to Ancestry. He took out a donation land claim and did well. His first wife Serepta was an "invalid" and died at 40 years of age in 1862.

Hugh returned to Morgan County OH in 1864 and married his 2nd wife Susan Jane Devine. She bore him four children, two of whom made it to adulthood.

Selling out in 1876, Hugh moved to Santiam Valley to buy timber land and a sawmill with his brother Simon. In 1880 he returned to Albany, buying 10 acres in the south west part of town.

In September 1882 his 2nd wife Susan also died at 40 years of age.

On March 9 1883, Hugh married Elizabeth Walker.

By 1896 Hugh Nickerson had a stroke and wife Elizabeth separated from him. Hugh went to live with family in Pendleton. He was committed to the state asylum at Salem where he died later that year.
