Battle Creek Emma W. "Cecilia" Barnes, 85, of Battle Creek died Thursday, Oct 5, 2000, at home.
She was born Feb. 5, 1915, in Kalamazoo to LeGrand and Emma (Binder) Whitcomb.
She graduated as valedictorian of St. Camillius School of Nursing at Nazareth College and worked as a registered nurse.
She and her husband owned and operated Peerless Water Softener Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Barnes; a son, Thomas J. Barnes; two grand-sons; brothers, LeGrand and Lawrence Whitcomb; and a sister, Mary Lorentz.
Surviving are sons, William L. Barnes of Portage and Kent A. and Philip J. Barnes, both of Kalamazoo; daughters, Lucinda A. Boven of Mattawa, Cecilia Barnes-Atchison of Kalamazoo, Kathleen A. Barnes of Battle Creek and Therese A. Boltz of Augusta; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
Community involvement, hobbies: Was dedicated to her family, business and church.
Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Betzler Funeral Home, Kalamazoo.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday in St. Thomas More Student Parish with the Rev. Ken Schmidt officiating.
Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.
