A native of Floyd County, Mr. Gresham was born on May 30, 1917, the son of the late William Arch and Amanda Elizabeth Shaw Gresham. He had been a lifelong resident of Rome and Floyd County. Mr. Gresham was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church and previously was a long-time member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having served tours of duty in North Africa and Italy with the 106th Station Hospital Medical Unit serving under Col. Fisher. Mr. Gresham was stationed on the front lines, attending to the wounded troops and civilian women and children.
He was "The Merita Bread Man" in this area and retired after 34 years of service. He was also affiliated with Rome Seed and Feed Company and Allied Frozen Foods. Mr. Gresham was preceded in death by his first wife, Angeline Ward Gresham, in 1980, to whom he was married in 1946. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Devis Watts Gresham; three sisters, Aline Gresham Madden, Katherine Gresham Pettyjohn and Polly Gresham Hart; along with nine half brothers and sisters.
Mr. Gresham is survived by his wife of 20 years, Irene Wiseman Park Gresham; two sons and their wives, Jeffrey Ward Gresham and Margaret Joy Gresham, and Gerald Melvin Gresham and Mary Lisa Thompson Gresham; two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda Gail Park Reed and Sigle W. "Butch" Reed and Carol Ann Park Pearson and Johnny Pearson; three grandsons, Ras Fincher, Tommy Gresham and Adam Gresham; one special granddaughter, Hannah Katherine Dillard; two step-grandsons, two step granddaughters and four step great-grandsons also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Gresham will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. Miguel Velez officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Honor Guard of the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 American Legion conducting military graveside rites.
Mr. Gresham will lie in state at the Heritage Chapel where the family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon by 1:30 p.m. and include Allen Madden, Ernest Gresham, Bob Wheeler, Danny Wiseman, Wayne Gresham, Anthony Buffington and Olin Hackney. Honorary pallbearers will include Clarence "Shorty" Lanham, Paul Haley, Gordon Harris and men of the Kingston United Methodist Church.
