Olar Smith actually has two markers. The one that seems to be his headstone is a white marble or granite and reads OLAR SMITH, FLORIDA, PVT., 547 ENGRS., DECEMBER 21, 1918. He is also one of three names on a concrete marker next to his grave. His info on that one reads OLAR SMITH, FEB 26 1869, DEC 23 1918, AGE 22, AT REST.
This concrete marker was very hard to read, even after I cleaned all the lichens and mold off the face. On the date of birth, Only the month, number day, and last number 6 on the year were readable. The first number looks like it could have been an 8 so 1886 was my best guess. The title is "PRIVATE" with the quotation marks. OSCAR SMITH, Born 2-26-86, Died 12-23-18, Liverpool, ENG, Buried here Oct. 25, 1921. It seems he died in England and a couple of years later the family had Oscar's remains brought back to the U.S. to be interred at the family plot. on the other end of the plot is a smaller marker with O.S. inscribed on it. I assume that is the initals of Oscar Smith.
