Berry was born in Silverton, Briscoe County, Texas, the son of Clovis Leonidas Alvis and Ruth Salome Bull Alvis. He was the brother to Viva Laura and Ned. In WWII he served the Navy in the Pacific on the USS Muscatine and was honored at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 29, 2004. He married Winifred Maudie Woods Alvis and they had two daughters, Mary Ellen Overstreet and Ruthie Jo Stamnitz.
