Matilda CLEVENGER Short, wife of James Houston Short, married 13 December 1846 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Matilda died in January 1880. James Houston Short and his children are found living in Madison County, Arkansas, Kings River township in the 1880 census, and Matilda is not listed. The 1880 Madison County Mortality Schedules for Kings River Township lists: Matilda Short, age 49, died of chronic dysentery in August 1879; it shows she had been a resident of Madison County for 4 years and lists A. S. Thomas was the attending physician.

Matilda was the daughter of Joshua and Mary Matilda MEAD Clevenger; and she was the mother of ten children: Mary; Andrew Jackson; John Wesley; Daniel B.; Thomas Jefferson; Mildred "Millie"; Samantha Ellen; Matilda; James Madison; and Christopher Columbus Short.

Matilda's grave is marked only with a fieldstone beside the tombstone of her sister, Eliza CLEVENGER Parker. Parker family members have recorded that Matilda was buried here between the grave of Eliza Parker and the grave of Arch C. Gresham.
