Brooks Abbott Dies July 25 In California. Lawrance Abbott of Sutherland and George Abbott of Sugarville received word, on July 25, of the sudden death of their brother, Bishop L. Brooks Abbott, at Chico, California. Brooks, who had just recently been released from position of Bishop of his Ward, collapsed of a heart attack at his work and was dead before he could be taken to Enole Hospital.

Bishop Abbott is a former resident of this area. Born in Annabella, Sevier County, in 1902, he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Abbott, and settled in Sutherland. He was enrolled in the Sutherland Elementary School upon its completion in 1912 and when he graduated from the eighth grade he attended the Millard Academy at Hinckley. He entered the Brigham Young University but his college career was interrupted by a call to the Mission Field. In 1922 he left for the California Mission where he completed a two-year mission for the Sutherland Ward.

He returned to California and married Selma Anderson who he had met during his missionary term, and in 1939 they settle in Chico. Though he made his living in the real estate business, his greatest dedication was to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he served as first counselor to the Bishop prior to becoming Bishop. During this time he devoted much time and effort toward erecting the church building at 1538 The Esplanade.

He resigned his position in the Ward when he was made first counselor of the Stake High Priest Quorum, a position he held at the time of his death. He is survived by his widow, 166 Citrus Avenue, Chico, California, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Taylor, Provo, Utah; three brothers Lawrence and George, Delta, and Thomas Lay, San Mateo, Calif.

Funeral services were held in the Chico Ward Chapel Saturday, July 27, 1957, at 2:00 p.m. Local people who made the trip to the services included Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Abbott, who drove with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Abbott, Mesquite, Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Losee, Mrs. Bill Clark, and Mrs. Bob Clark. Mrs. Losee is the daughter of the late Leon Abbott, formerly of Hinckley, and Sharon and Choral Clark are daughters of the late Sepha Abbott Robinson of Delta. They were driven by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McClellan, Salt Lake City. Published in the Millard County Chronicle Progress, Delta, Utah, Thursday, 01 August 1957, page 1.
